Sustainable Inland Waterways by the PIANC INCOM Working Group 203 Abstract During the Smart River Conference 2019 in Lyon, a first presentation on “Sustainable Inland Waterways” was given by the INCOM Working Group 203. At that time, the procedure of this group was still at its beginning and the presentation was mainly on the intensions how to develop this topic. Meanwhile WG203 is on its final working stage. Therefore, it will be possible to present relevant results as well as a few open questions, which are remaining. Sustainable development of Inland Waterways (IW) can be measured according to sustainable development goals. The 17 United Nation’s Development Goals are generally accepted and can be used for resp. broken down to the development of IW. Another way of defining goals of sustainability is the consideration of the Multifunction of Inland Waterways that, in addition to the main function of shipping, includes for example the uses of flood protection, hydropower, irrigation, water supply or people’s recreation that, in particular, with a very positive impact on the society’s health and welfare. The development of Inland Waterways in a sustainable way needs the awareness of the IW managers for their Social Responsibility. Social responsibility means the awareness for the impacts of the organization’s decisions and activities on society and environment. Balancing the Social Responsible Core Subjects according to the international norm of ISO 26 000, a holistic approach to the organization’s activities becomes required. The norm of ISO 26 000 is the basement for the philosophy of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). It provides the theoretical fundament for an acting organization by - motivating the organization why to implement CSR - mentioning the main principles of social responsibility - advising the organization to recognize relevant stakeholders - defining goals - describing the practice of integrating social responsibility throughout an organization. It is the general approach of CSR: think global but act local. The presentation will describe the theoretical basis for social responsibility. Furthermore, a practical approach will be given by presenting examples for “Best practice” resp. for “Lesson learned”. Finally, a draft of recommendation for a stepwise approach for IW manager will be presented. This part of the report needs more completion.
