Propellers of ships generate high velocities adjacent to quay walls, jetties and locks. Generally, a bottom protection is installed in order to prevent instability due to scour. Although design guidance exist, propeller-induced loads are far from fully understood and have predominantly been derived on the basis of model tests. The validation of the existing design methods is lacking. A series of new field measurements have therefore been conducted in November 2018 and in June 2019, in which the propeller-induced flow velocities were measured. The objective of the measurements was to obtain a better understanding of the flow velocities that occur near the bed and to verify the applicability of design methods presently in use. The field measurements have been conducted at the Antarcticakade in the port of Rotterdam, which is a quay wall for inland barges having a nautical water depth of approximately 7-9 m.

The first measurement campaign involved measurements of the main propeller of a tugboat. The flow velocities in the propeller jet behind the tugboat have been measured using a single upward looking ADCP sensor. The measurements were aimed to test whether it was possible to accurately measure propeller-induced velocities using a simple and flexible measurement setup, which could be conducted by a small crew. The measurements showed that that the applied test setup was practical and applicable. However, the considered situation was not representative for the design loads of the bottom protection, since the underkeel clearance was fairly large resulting in rather low flow velocities near the bed.

In the second measurement campaign, a more normative situation was considered, using the inland barge Vorstenbosch (Length = 147.5 m, Beam = 22,8 m and Draft = 5.4 m), which is the largest inland barge in presently available in the Netherlands. The measurements were aimed on the flow velocities in the transverse thruster jets. The Vorstenbosch is equipped with two channel-type bow thrusters. This type of bow thruster was selected, since for this type of thrusters no clear design guidelines are yet available. The flow velocities have been measured with two ADCP sensors, measuring an array of flow velocities, and two ADV sensors, which have a small measurement volume with a high sampling rate. Two situations have been considered during the measurement: a bow thruster induced jet pointed towards the quay (reflection) and jet pointed towards the port basin (free flow) In addition, different underkeel clearances were considered, and the effect of using one and two bow thrusters were studied.
