The classification of the ship tunnel has a significant influence on the tunnel design and its operational safety. Firstly, the classification standard of road tunnels, railway tunnels, and canal waterways in relevant existing rules, codes, and guidelines are analyzed and compared. Then, the problems in classifying ship navigation tunnels are summarized. To solve these problems, we came up with three factors concerning the ship tunnel classification; and concluded that the classification of a ship tunnel should be determined comprehensively by considering both the grade of its corresponding waterway and the tunnel length. The grade of the corresponding waterway can be regarded as a reference-grade index that identifies the ship tunnel’s basic properties, and the tunnel length is a static characteristic index. Based on the statistics of actual status and technique level in ship tunnel construction and projects across China, we proposed that the characteristic length of the ship tunnel is 0.5 km, 1.0 km, 3.0 km, 5.0 km, and 10.0 km. Besides, incorporating the grades of the corresponding waterway, the ship tunnels can be divided into five grades, i.e., I, II, III, IV, V.
