Recently, energy conservation and emission reduction is the development trend of various industries. However, the carbon emissions of the shipping industry are increasing year by year. Meanwhile, with the rise of global fuel prices, shipping companies are facing great challenges to reduce operating costs and improve market competitiveness. Optimizing ship energy consumption is an important task to develop environment-friendly shipping and reduce the operating cost of shipping companies. Speed is one of the most critical factors affecting ship energy consumption. Many studies show that it is an efficient way to save ship energy consumption by obtaining appropriate speed and reducing ship energy consumption. Compared with rivers and oceans, canals have the characteristics of shallow water depth, narrow width and low water velocity. According to the natural environment characteristics of the canal, taking the canal ships in Northern Jiangsu as the research object, this paper analyzes the low-energy operation scheme of canal ships. In this study, the main factors affecting the energy consumption of canal ships are determined through analysis, the stress of ships is analyzed, and the mathematical model of ship energy consumption, ship speed and environmental factors is established. Then, guided by the lowest ship energy consumption, the optimized economic ship speed is calculated by calling the optimization algorithm. It is verified by an example of ships in the North Jiangsu canal. The economic speed corresponding to different captain and different water depth is calculated by using the model. Applying the optimized economic speed to actual ship navigation can effectively reduce ship fuel consumption, which is of great significance to achieve the goal of energy conservation and emission reduction.
