Flood control, power generation and agricultural irrigation are the primary functional uses of the reservoir. The high sediment concentration of the water flow is the main reason for the serious sedimentation of the reservoirs in the Yellow River. Due to the cascade reservoir establishment of the Yellow River and the joint scheduling between reservoirs, the discharge of the lower reservoirs decreases in flood season which reduces the efficiency of hydrodynamic scouring in reservoir area. As the first-level of cascade reservoirs in the connecting area between the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River, Wanjiazhai Reservoir is selected as the research sample. In this study, a numerical model of Wanjiazhai Reservoir was established to analyze the influence factors of the upstream reservoir operation and scouring. Based on the sedimentation pattern discrimination formula, the formula suitable for Wanjiazhai Reservoir was recommended. In addition, a variety of flushing methods have been analyzed and a method to reduce sedimentation of reservoir was carried out. The results show that the larger inflow discharge, the larger maximum sediment diameter of incipient motion. When the inflow discharge reaches 1200 m3/s, the sediment diameter of incipient motion varied from 0.015 to 0.094 mm; when the inflow discharge reaches 1800 m3/s, the sediment diameter of incipient motion varied from 0.014 to 0.094 mm; when the inflow discharge reaches 2500 m3/s, the sediment diameter of incipient motion varied from 0.010 to 0.094 mm and all these sediments can be drained out of the reservoir. Besides the reservoir flushes sediment with 1200~1800 m3/s discharge under the condition of upstream water storage.
