Meandering channels with compound cross sections often appear in channelized rivers of the alluvial plain. After the canalization of the river, the flow decelerates and the mainstream turns to the concave bank in the bend, which leads to the beach on the convex bank side and river channel on the concave side. In this study, a numerical model of water flow conditions in a wide and shallow bend with large curvature was applied to simulate and compare flow velocity in the bend with different turning angles and turning radii. Moreover, the eddy viscosity coefficient of the numerical model was calibrated with the experimental results. Besides the influence of the elevation of the concave bank beach on the transverse and longitudinal flow velocity of the channel was analyzed. The results clearly show that the decreased ratio of the river bend radius to the river width leads to the larger variation range of the flow velocity in the bend and along the width. The smaller the turning angle, the more uniform the vertical velocity distribution. The relative height of the beach has a significant impact on the navigable flow conditions in the bend. When the ratio σ of the height of the beach to the water depth is more than 0.8, the transverse flow velocity of the entry-bend section is smaller than the transverse velocity of the exit-bend section. When the ratio σ is less than 0.6, the transverse flow velocity of the entrance is greater than the exit. This characteristic is the opposite of the longitudinal flow change regulation.
