The piano-key weir is a new type of labyrinth weir structure form, its structure is stable, upstream and downstream inverted and small base area and other advantages greatly improve the scope of application, and it has a high discharge capacity and overcurrent efficiency, that is a very effective solution to the reservoir and the dam discharge energy capacity is not enough, there are more applications in foreign countries, but relatively few applications in China. In this paper, the experimental observation of the hydraulic characteristics of the overflow of a 25 meters long and 2 meters wide hydraulic physics model of a piano-key weir confirms that it has a good overflow capacity but also limits the study of its complex flow. By combining the numerical simulation software, the three dimensional flow field of the piano-key weir is numerically simulated based on the RNG k-ɛ turbulent flow model and the free-surface VOF technique to analyze the changes in the hydraulic characteristics of the drainage flow pattern, flow line, flow velocity and pressure, and to clarify the hydraulic characteristics of the discharge and the mechanism of the increased discharge capacity by combining the results with the physical model test. In addition, we compare and analyze the overflow capacity and discharge efficiency of key weir and traditional thin-walled weir, and use the over-discharge ratio to better reflect the advantages of piano-key weir in flood discharge, and discuss the application of piano-key weir in practical engineering and the application of diseased reservoirs and dams.
