The Baihutan ship lock of Changshanjiang River is located in the straight section of the S-shaped channel and the upstream approach channel is located on the concave bank of the bending section of the river. The navigable flow conditions of the connecting section between the entrance area of the upstream approach channel and the bend is complex and chaotic under the influence of the circumfluence. Affected by the characteristics of the ship lock layout, high-speed transverse flow is easy to appear in the entrance area under the peak flow and ships are prone to drift due to transverse force action. It is difficult to meet the requirements of safe navigation of ships. In this study a 1:80 generalized physical hydraulic model was established. The evaluation of navigable flow conditions and the remote-control ship model test were carried out. The transverse and longitudinal flow rates were measured and the flow patterns in the entrance area was observed. The navigable flow conditions of the connecting section between the entrance area of the approach channel and the bend were analyzed and optimization and improvement measures were proposed. The results show that proper adjustment of the approach channel route, increasing the angle between the main stream of the river and the channel line and smoothly connecting the channel and the approach channel in the main channel of the concave bank can improve the water flow conditions. It can improve the navigable water flow conditions at the entrance area and the connection of the bend, meet the requirements of the flow rate index, and ensure the safe navigation of the ship. It can provide a positive navigable flow condition for the entrance area and the bend, meet the requirements of flow rate indicators and ensure the navigation safety of ships. The results of this study can provide recommendations and references for similar rivers.
