Situated in the Yangtze RiverDelta region, Nanjing has aprominent place in Chinese history and culture, having served as the capital of various Chinese dynasties, kingdoms and republican governments datingfrom the 3rd century to 1949.

Nanjing is the transportation hub in eastern China and thedownstream Yangtze River area. Different means of transportationconstitute a three-dimensional transport system that includes land,water and air. As in most other Chinese cities, public transportationis the dominant mode of travel of the majority of the citizens. As ofDecember 2020, Nanjing has 5 bridges and two tunnels over theYangtze River, which are tying districts north of the river with thecity center on the south bank.
